Serendipity, Error, and Exaptation
Innovation is often portrayed as a linear, carefully planned process, but many meaningful breakthroughs emerge from unplanned moments, mistakes, or creative reuse. Concepts such as serendipity, error, and exaptation help explain how innovation frequently arises not from perfect foresight, but from attention, curiosity, and the willingness to adapt when outcomes diverge from expectations. Together, these concepts highlight the importance of flexibility and reflection in innovation-driven environments.
Serendipity
To me, serendipity represents the ability to recognize value in something unexpected rather than the randomness of the discovery itself. It is less about luck and more about perception. A classic example is the discovery of penicillin, where Alexander Fleming noticed that mold contamination had killed bacteria in a petri dish. The breakthrough did not occur because he was looking for antibiotics, but because he paid attention to an anomaly and pursued it rather than discarding it.
In my own experience, serendipity often appears when working with data. While exploring datasets for one purpose, unexpected correlations or patterns sometimes emerge that suggest entirely different applications. These moments are only useful if there is enough curiosity and flexibility to pause the original objective and explore what surfaced unexpectedly. Serendipity, in this sense, rewards openness rather than rigid adherence to plans.
Error
Errors differ from serendipity in that they originate from failure rather than surprise. However, errors can be powerful innovation catalysts when examined instead of concealed. A well-known example is the development of Post-it Notes, which resulted from a failed attempt to create a strong adhesive. The initial outcome was technically a mistake, but reframing the “failure” revealed a new use case that proved enormously valuable.
In practice, I see errors as feedback rather than setbacks. In technical or analytical work, a model that fails to perform as expected often reveals flawed assumptions or hidden variables. Investigating why something failed can lead to better understanding and improved solutions. Innovation emerges not from avoiding errors, but from designing environments where errors are visible, analyzable, and safe to explore.
Exaptation
Exaptation involves repurposing something that already exists for a use it was not originally designed to fulfill. Unlike serendipity or error, exaptation is often intentional, but still creative. A common example is the Global Positioning System (GPS), which was originally developed for military navigation and later repurposed for civilian applications such as transportation, logistics, and mobile devices.
From my perspective, exaptation is especially relevant in technology and cybersecurity. Tools or datasets designed for compliance, monitoring, or diagnostics are often repurposed for threat hunting, forecasting, or optimization. Exaptation highlights the value of looking at existing systems not just for what they were built to do, but for what they could do in a different context.

Serendipity, error, and exaptation each illustrate that innovation rarely follows a straight path. Serendipity depends on awareness, error depends on reflection, and exaptation depends on creative reuse. Together, they suggest that innovation thrives in environments that value curiosity over certainty and learning over perfection.
